KMT chairman meets head of China's political advisory body

Shanghai, May 2 (CNA) Eric Chu (???), chairman of Taiwan's ruling Kuomintang (KMT), met with Yu Zhengsheng (???), head of a political advisory body, in China Saturday. Chu, who arrived in Shanghai earlier that day, met the chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, after touring Fudan University and giving a speech there. Yu noted that Chu's father was from Zhejiang Province, adding that he also comes from the province. Also attending the meeting were KMT Vice Chairman Huang Min-hui (???), KMT Secretary-General Lee Shu-chuan (???), KMT Policy Committee Chief Executive Lai Shyh-bao(???), deputy secretaries-general Huang Chao-shun (???) and Chiang Cheng-yen (???), and Mainland Affairs Department Director Kao Koong-lian (???). In addition to Yu, Chinese officials present included Han Zheng (??), Communist Party of China (CPC) secretary of Shanghai, Zhang Zhijun (???), head of the Taiwan Affairs Office under the State Council and Yang Xiong (??), deputy CPC secretary of Shanghai, as well as Chen Deming (???), head of the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits. Chu, who is also mayor of New Taipei, arrived in Shanghai earlier that day at the head of a 100-member delegation to attend an annual economic and cultural forum between the KMT and the CPC. The highlight of Chu's three-day visit will be his first meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping (???), who is CPC general secretary and the top leader of China and its ruling party. The meeting, which will take place in Beijing Monday, will follow those between Chu's predecessors Lien Chan (??) and Wu Poh-hsiung (???) and then-CPC General Secretary Hu Jintao (???), respectively. But it will be only the third time a KMT chief has held talks with his CPC counterpart when the KMT is in power in Taiwan. The two previous meetings took place in 2008 and 2009, when Wu was KMT chairman. (By Yin Chun-chieh and Lilian Wu)
