More teachers needed for 12-year education system: school principal

Taipei, May 2 (CNA) At least a 13.6 percent increase in the number of high school teachers will be needed when Taiwan's compulsory education system is extended from nine to 12 years, the principal of one of the country's most prestigious high schools said Saturday. The goal of the 12-year compulsory education system -- which will include high schools -- is to create flexible learning styles that allow students to take more elective classes according to their personal needs and interests, said Chen Wei-hung (???), principal of Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School. The idea of the new education system is to increase the proportion of elective course credits for high school students, Chen said at a conference in Taipei to discuss issues related to the 12-year compulsory education system. To that end, schools will need more teachers and will have to build more classrooms, he said. For example, he said, at least 54 classrooms will be needed for a school with class sizes of 36. The number of teachers will need to be increased by 13.6 percent, while an annual subsidy of NT$3.82 million (US$124,239) for the school will be needed, he said. "It would be hard to achieve the goal of the 12-year compulsory education system if such basic requirements cannot be met," Chen said. Also speaking at Saturday's conference was Chen Jwu-ting (???), a professor at National Taiwan University, who said that the key to a successful 12-year compulsory education system lies in a personalized curriculum for each student. "School authorities shouldn't put all students through the same subjects," he said. Meanwhile, teachers should have the ability to develop curricula, just like a tour guide plans journeys, he said. School curricula should not be just exam-oriented, he added. The Ministry of Education has decided the guidelines for the new curriculum under the 12-year compulsory education system, which will be implemented in 2018. (By Chen Chih-chung and Elaine Hou)
