Stormy weather predicted early next week: CWB

Taipei, May 2 (CNA) A significant weather front will arrive over Taiwan May 4 beginning the two-month "plum rain" season, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Saturday, warning of heavy rain and thunderstorms across Taiwan. The weather could become more unstable from later Sunday as the front nears, with showers expected in northern and northeastern Taiwan, according to forecasters. There could be more rain starting May 4 in northern, eastern and central Taiwan, while southern Taiwan could see afternoon thunderstorms, the bureau said. The rainfall could be good news for Taiwan, however, as it is experiencing its worst drought in decades. People around Taiwan are desperate for rain as water rationing has been imposed, affecting farmers, major water users and households. Despite a forecast for heavy rain early next week, the bureau cautioned that rainfall in May will be slightly below average, especially in central and southern Taiwan, which will likely have to wait until June before the current dry spell eases. During the seasonal plum rain season, frontal systems tend to linger around Taiwan, which results in consecutive days of severe thunderstorms and heavy rain. The most intense rainfall during the plum rain season usually takes place between mid-May and mid-June, bringing heavy precipitation to the drought-prone central and southern regions.
