Death of Burmese worker highlights plight of migrant workers in Thailand

According to the Asian Correspondent, a migrant worker from Myanmar was killed after he slipped into a meat grinder at a pet food factory in Thailand, police said.

The death of 37-year-old Burmese man Zaw May Zir at a pet food factory in Thailand has once again highlighted the extremely dangerous conditions migrant workers are often exposed to in Thailand.

Zaw was crushed when he accidentally slipped into a meat grinder at the factory in Chonburi province. Police lieutenant Thaninthorn Suaypan said: “It was an accident… I went to examine the man with the doctor and the lower half of his body was crushed.”

Organizations like the Burma Solidarity Center have long lambasted the working conditions that foreign migrants endure in Thailand, pointing out that negligent safety standards have left such laborers at risk.
