Eastern Taiwan triathlon event to feature river rafting

Taipei, April 30 (CNA) An annual triathlon event along Taiwan's east coast, which features river rafting instead of the traditional swimming competition, will kick off June 21, organizers said Thursday. The Xiuguluan River Rafting Triathlon, now in its sixth year, will be part of the country's celebration of summer solstice as Taiwan is one of the 16 countries in the world where the Tropic of Cancer passes, tourism officials said. The race will include 11 kilometers of river rafting, followed by 12.6 km of running and 44 km of cycling, according to the East Coast National Scenic Area Administration. Administration deputy head Lin Wei-ling (???) said the registration, which will run through May 24, has already seen some 20 triathloners from five countries. Speaking at a promotional event Thursday, guest runners Erica Reinhold and Bastiaan Bruell said the fact that the race introduces river rafting to replace swimming could be less physically-demanding for triathlon beginners. Xiuguluan and flows its way 103 km until it empties into the Pacific Ocean on the East Coast. (By Lee Hsin-Yin)
