The butt stops here: Taipei to raise penalty for cigarette littering

Taipei, April 30 (CNA) The penalties for cigarette butt littering in Taipei will be raised on May 1, the city's Department of Environmental Protection said Thursday. While the fine for cigarette butt littering will remain NT$1,200 (US$39) for the first offense, the fine will increase to NT$3,600 for the second offense, the department said. Those who are caught for a third offense, will be fined NT$5,000 and required to take an environmental education course, it added. A survey conducted by the department has identified 955 sites in the vicinity of commercial establishments that are susceptible to cigarette butt littering. In addition, drains, sidewalk tree pits and traffic islands are also hot spots where cigarette butts are often littered, the department found. At present, cigarette receptacles have been attached to 2,041 street trash cans around the city and 266 more will be added by the end of May, the department said. (By Huang Li-yun and Y.F. Low)
