Enterovirus fears escalating: CDC

Taipei, April 30 (CNA) The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) warned Thursday of a growing enterovirus threat, saying that Taiwan could see a significant enterovirus outbreak in the coming weeks. The number of enterovirus cases grew to 6,600 between April 19 and April 25, a 20 percent increase from the previous week, the CDC said. The surge indicates the possibility that an enterovirus epidemic could break out in the near future, said CDC Deputy Director-General Chou Jih-haw (???). The public should pay more attention to personal hygiene, especially in the face of water rationing in several parts of the country, the CDC said. The CDC warned that infants and children under 5 are the most vulnerable to enterovirus infection and its complications, and it advised parents with children suffering from a persistent fever, drowsiness, inactivity or continuous vomiting to take them to a doctor.
