40 years in Taiwan, Myanmarian volunteers as a story teller

A 60-year-old overseas Chinese woman, Liao Lan-fan, was a victim of the Chinese Expulsion campaign in Myanmar, and the local government nationalized her husband’s cookie factory. After moving to Taiwan, she said she has been very grateful.” Having lived in many countries, Taiwan is the best place to settle down,” she added.
Liao is the first new immigrant volunteer in New Taipei City to tell stories to the new immigrant offspring. She also hosted the Songkran, letting the overseas Myanmarians spend their New Year in Taiwan.
Many of the foreign mothers asked her to read in Chinese when she was telling the stories. She indicated that in Vietnam and Myanmar, the governments request people to speak the local language, so most of the immigrants didn’t have the chance to study Chinese.
The New Taipei City Library will open on May 10 and will have 17,500 Southeast Asian books with 40 new immigrant volunteers offering their free services.
