Chen Chu to offer the ideal environment for learning native languages

Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu attended the “National Mother Tongue Day” and indicated every group in Kaohsiung has the right to speak their mother tongue. She also promised to arrange lessons and instructors, to offer an ideal learning environment.

“National Mother Tongue Day” was organized by the Kaohsiung Education Bureau, and some of the new immigrants performed the traditional dacing in the event. Hokkien and Hakka were added to the mother language courses in 2010. There are 521 people with Hokkien certificates and 106 with Hakka. Vietnamese, Indonesian, Thai, Cambodian and Myanmar classes were added in 2012, encouraging the younger generation to learn their native languages.

The “National Mother Tongue Day”also featured native language materials published by the Department of Education, including picture books of Hla’alua and Kanakanavu, which became the 15th and 16th aboriginal groups in Taiwan last June.
