Taitung magistrate sentenced to 6 months in prison

Taipei, April 24 (CNA) Taitung County Magistrate Justin Huang (???) has been sentenced to six months in prison for violating the Business Entity Accounting Act, the Taipei District Court ruled Friday. Huang, a member of the Kuomintang, was indicted in 2008 on charges of bribery and using his position to lobby for pharmaceutical companies in 2004 and 2005 while serving as a legislator. Progress on his case had been stalled until he was tried in the Taipei District Court earlier this year. The court said it found no evidence to prove that Huang was guilty of corruption but did find that he breached article 71-5 of the Act by engaging in falsifying accounts or financial statements. His sentence can be commuted into a fine. Huang maintained his innocence after hearing the verdict on Friday and said he will discuss the ruling with his lawyer before deciding whether to appeal.
