Kaohsiung to soon face stricter water rationing

Taipei, April 24 (CNA) Water rationing will tighten in Kaohsiung in early May due to a prolonged drought, a drought emergency response task force under the Ministry of Economic Affairs said Friday. Under third-phase water rationing procedures that will be imposed on May 4, the supply of tap water to Kaohsiung households will be cut completely two days a week on a rotational basis, the task force said. The measure will affect 2.56 million people belonging to 965,000 households and will help save 170,500 cubic meters of water per day, it said.
As Taiwan continues to battle its worst drought in decades, third-phase water rationing was imposed for the first time on April 8 in parts of New Taipei, neighboring Taoyuan City and Hsinchu County in northern Taiwan. The first- and second-phase rationing currently in place in Tainan and Kaohsiung involves reducing water pressure at night and restricting water supply to consumers who usually use more than 1,000 cubic meters per month. Daily water supplies to these big users in the two metropolitan areas have been cut by 10 percent. (By Huang Chiao-wen and Y.F. Low)
