EU absolves Philippines on illegal fishing

The European Commission (EC) gave the Philippines the 'green card' after it carried out the appropriate reforms of the legal system which equip it to tackle illegal fishing activities in the country, according to the Manila Bulletin.
The commission issued this directive to both the Philippines and South Korea. European Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Karmenu Vella, noted that: “By using our market weight, the EU is getting important players on board. Both South Korea and the Philippines have taken responsible action, amended their legal systems and switched to a proactive approach against illegal fishing.”
This stops the 'identification' procedure that was caused by the issuance of a 'yellow card' to the Philippines in June 2014. The yellow card was given to the Philippines for failing to meet international standards on curbing illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
