Immigrant mom wins Mother of the Year Award

The Keelung government is going to give its Mother of the Year Award before Mother’s Day, adding an award in the category of “Self-reliant Mother”, and new immigrant mothers are also on the winners' list.
Wu Ting-feng, the chief of the city's Social Affairs Department, said that there are many mothers out there working very hard under difficult situations, and attention shouldn’t be only given to those typical mothers.
The chief of the Keelung Children and Families Affairs Office indicated that there are 600 single mothers in the area, and 160 of them are new immigrants, all of them are underprivileged families. “We offer seven of the awards this year, and hope the public will pay more attention to them. Nguyen, a new immigrant from Vietnam, relied on her husband since she moved to Taiwan, but not after long, he was paralyzed, and the family burden suddenly fell on her shoulders. She overcame the language barrier and got a job to support the family. She will be receiving the award as the first immigrant mother.
Wu said that through this public ceremony, he hopes more attention can be paid to those non-typical families.
