MOF officials visit I-Mei factory, recommend electronic receipts

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A delegation from the Ministry of Finance Information Center and the National Taxation Bureau of the Northern Area visited the tourism factory of I-Mei Foods Co., Ltd, in Taoyuan City Wednesday.
MOF officials praised I-Mei’s food safety measures during the visit and recommended the use of electronic receipts as being in tune with the company’s spirit.
Jack Lin, the associate director of the general manager’s office at the company, introduced its history and its basic business philosophy to the 30-member group. The delegation was also made familiar with its storage system and with the way in which it traces the origin of its foodstuffs.
The I-Mei plant’s laboratory formed a key part of the tour, with testing practices and procedures being presented by company CEO Luis Ko. The Ministry of Health and Welfare should not be the only body responsible for maintaining food safety, he said, mentioning the role which should be played by customs inspectors.
They had to check the places of origin of the food ingredients, while importers had the duty to clearly report the use they wanted to make of the imported products, Ko said. He emphasized the importance of the separation between ingredients for human consumption and those for industrial use. Many food safety issues could only be solved if those two categories were kept apart, he added.
MOF officials and Ko went on to discuss the use of electronic receipts praised by the government as a remedy against the use of problematic products in the preparation of food for human consumption. The I-Mei CEO approved of the receipts, but said they would not solve all the problems and might provoke a backlash.
The MOF delegation drew a parallel between I-Mei’s basic values and the electronic receipt project, especially when it came to checking up on the origin of the ingredients, their prices and the lists of customers.
