Chu-Xi meeting scheduled for May 4 in Beijing

Taipei, April 21 (CNA) Ruling Kuomintang (KMT, ???) Chairman Eric Chu (???) will meet Communist Party of China (CPC) General Secretary Xi Jinping (???) in Beijing May 4, KMT sources said Tuesday. The meeting between the heads of the ruling parties on the two sides of the Taiwan Strait will take place just one day after a forum between the two parties in Shanghai, in which Chu will participate as head of the KMT delegation. The sources said that Chu is following the precedent set by his predecessors in attending the forum, which serves as an important platform for exchanges between the two parties. Former KMT chairmen Lien Chan and Wu Poh-hsiung both took part in the forums when they were heads of the party. Chu is widely considered the strongest KMT rival for the next presidency against Tsai Ing-wen (???), chairwoman of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (???). Tsai has been nominated by her party to run in the 2016 presidential election, but Chu has stated several times that he is not considering running. The sources said that the Chu-Xi meeting became a reality after Chu ruled out the possibility of his running in the election. (By Liu Li-jung and Bear Lee)
