Taiyen Biotech caught using industrial salt

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiyen Biotech Co., Ltd. imported industrial salt which it used in the production of salt for human consumption, the Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday.
The company, which was once a state-owned enterprise known as the Taiwan Salt Corporation but which later diversified into cosmetics and bottled water, could face a fine of up to NT$3 million (US$96,400).
During tests of foodstuffs at 20 companies known as major importers of salt in March, inspectors found 22 products which contained heavy metals and other illegal anomalies, reports said.
They also came to the conclusion that Taiyen had imported natural salt listed as for non-food use, but had processed it into salt sold to consumers in violation of relevant laws.
The amount of imported natural salt at Taiyen totaled 37,528 tons, according to some media reports.
Eight other companies were told to improve their practices within a set period, or they would also face heavy fines.
