Kinmen holds oyster shucking contest, 1,000 fans happy as clams

Taipei, April 19 (CNA) A cultural festival featuring oysters and wheat opened in Jinning Township, in outlying Kinmen County Saturday, attracting some 1,000 people to experience the pleasures of pastoral life. The centerpiece of the annual festival is an oyster shucking competition, which drew 1,000 people who formed a line about 200 meters on a great oyster farm in Beishan Village to shuck approximately 6,000 kilograms of shelled oysters. Film director Leon Dai (???), who is on a private trip to the outlying island, also took part in the event which attracted a crowd of a wide range of ages, with a four-year-old boy being the youngest. A 62-year-old woman surnamed Lee said that although she is a native of Beishan, this year was the first time she has attended the event. She collected a bowl of oyster meat removed from the shell in 20 minutes, saying that she has developed her skill in shucking oysters from the age of six. All participants were allowed to take the freshly shucked oysters home, according to event organizers. (By Amy Huang and Evelyn Kao)
