Technician sustains burns at military-run R&D institute

Taipei, April 15 (CNA) A technician at a military-run research and development institute sustained severe burns Wednesday when the chemical explosive powders he was collecting for disposal ignited in flames. The accident occurred at the military-run National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology's (???????) Systems Manufacturing Center at the in New Taipei City's Sansia District (??). The technician sustained second- and third-degree burns on his head, neck, chest and hands, covering about 25 percent of body surface. He was reportedly conscious and in stable condition, and was receiving care at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Linkou, New Taipei. The institute said that the chemical explosive powders the technician was handling had ignited in flames for reasons yet to be determined. The powder solution is comprised of black gunpowder, boron metal powder, osmium tetroxide, and lead (II, IV) oxide, the institute said. In light of the accident, the institute said that it will cooperate fully with investigators, ensure the safety of the accident site, and see to the technician's recovery. An accident had occurred at the Systems Manufacturing Center on Feb. 5 this year, causing shrapnel wounds to two Army officers in the ranks of colonel and major. (By Lee Lih-rong and Ted Chen)
