Kentucky governor to visit Taiwan to promote trade ties

Taipei, April 11 (CNA) The governor of the U.S. state of Kentucky will visit Taiwan next week to promote trade relations between his state and Taiwan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Saturday. Steve Beshear, leading a delegation of other officials from Kentucky, is scheduled to arrive in Taiwan on Sunday and meet with high-level government officials in Taipei during the 4-day visit, the ministry said. Beshear will meet with President Ma Ying-jeou (???) and call on senior officials at the ministries of economic affairs and transportation and communications, the ministry said. It said the delegation will also meet with Foreign Minister David Lin (???) and Francis Liang (???), chairman of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), the country's main trade promotion body.
On what will be his second visit to Taiwan, Beshear will witness the signing of a memorandum of understanding between TAITRA and Kentucky to expand bilateral economic and trade cooperation, the ministry said. The ministry described Beshear as a good friend of Taiwan's. The Kentucky General Assembly has also been supportive of Taiwan's efforts to expand its international participation and join the International Civil Aviation Organization, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the World Health Organization, the ministry said.
