Taiwan advised to invest in high-tech R&D to boost national defense

Taipei, April 11 (CNA) The best investment Taiwan could make in national defense would be research and development of high technology, an educator said Saturday in Taipei. Lee Chia-tung (???) , an emeritus chair professor at National Tsing Hua University, said Taiwan spends a lot of money buying weapons from other countries but has not done enough to encourage private sector development of high technology. The education of Taiwan's military officers is also not up to par, Lee said in a speech that focused on the idea that everything in Taiwan would have to start from basics in the next century. Commenting on a recent flap over a security breach in which an Army pilot gave a local TV personality and other civilians access to Taiwan's most advanced attack helicopter, the U.S.-made AH-64E Apache, Lee said "it's no big deal." One can find countless Apache photos in any Google search, he said. But the average Taiwanese still thinks the Apache helicopters are something to be proud of, Lee said, drawing a parallel with the attitudes during the Qing Dynasty when many military vessels were purchased from foreign countries. He said Taiwan has been doing everything it can to buy aircraft and vessels, but cannot manufacture them. This is bound to lead to the same fate as in the Qing Dynasty, when it lost every battle it fought, he said. (By Chen Chih-chung and Lilian Wu)
