Concerns over fundraising for kidney donor who responded to plea on car window delays surgery

Delay over fundraising for kidney donor found with car plea

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (AP) -- A fundraising effort on behalf of a kidney donor has delayed surgery for a Maine woman who found the donor by painting a personal plea on her car's rear window.

The donor, Josh Dall-Leighton, and his wife tell the Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/1Gs1WIM ) that Maine Medical Center officials informed them this week that it has concerns about the amount of money raised for them.

Christine Royles, who's suffering from kidney failure, organized fundraisers to reimburse Dall-Leighton for unpaid time away from work. Someone else established an online fund that ballooned to more than $40,000.

The appearance that someone could be profiting from an organ donation raises ethical concerns because it's illegal to sell organs. A hospital spokeswoman had no comment.
