Vice economics minister denies he will talk AIIB bid on China trip

Taipei, April 9 (CNA) Vice Economics Minister Cho Shih-chao (??? ) said Thursday a Taiwanese newspaper report that he will discuss with the mainland Taiwan's bid to join the proposed China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) during his ongoing visit there, was false. Cho, who is on a visit to China as a member of the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF, ???????) delegation, said he had not and will not discuss issues related to Taiwan's AIIB bid with China. A Liberty Times' report said Cho first visited the United States to talk about the issue, including what name Taiwan might use to join the AIIB, during the four-day Tomb Sweeping Festival weekend from April 3-6 and he subsequently converged in Taipei with the SEF delegation before leaving for the mainland on April 7. According to the report, Cho would negotiate with China regarding Taiwan's AIIB bid based on the bottom line he reached with Washington: Taiwan should join the AIIB using the title "Chinese Taipei," the name under which Taiwan acceded to the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in 1991. However, Cho told a CNA reporter he was visiting the mainland in his capacity as a SEF board member and his itinerary was arranged some time ago. According to the pre-planned journey, he was scheduled to visit China-based Taiwanese businesses to gain an understanding of their operations. He will also check out arts and cultural facilities while there. The report's claim that he was a special envoy sent to China was utterly untrue, Cho said, adding that the media has a strong imagination. Chou Jih-shine (???), SEF vice chairman and spokesman, also said Cho has not left the delegation since he joined the group in Taipei on April 7 and has no plan to talk with China about the AIIB. Chou reiterated that SEF Chairman Lin Join-sane (???) also would not touch on issues related to the AIIB during a meeting scheduled for Friday between him and his Chinese counterpart Chen Deming (???), president of the Beijing-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits ( ARATS, ????????), in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province.
