Ko marks 100th day with call for fairness and justice

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – At a concert event marking his 100th day in office Friday, Taipei City Mayor Ko Wen-je said that the capital should have even more caring, fairness and justice.
The outspoken independent surgeon was elected last November 29 on a platform of reform, transparency and direct democracy, and he took office on December 25.
His 100th day in office was marked by a classical music concert at which 100 volunteers and campaign workers were invited.
During a pause in the program, Ko also addressed the crowd, saying his coming to power was only the beginning of a four-year term which would lay the groundwork for 50 years to come.
The first 100 days were designed to rebuild the trust of the public in government, he said. “Trust is the basis of all reform,” according to Ko, who invited the citizens of the capital to create an even better Taipei together.
He mentioned the campaign against 226 illegal structures and the introduction of i-Voting as well as the formation of several new committees as initial examples of reform, while emphasizing the importance of crossing party lines, of being “white” rather than “blue” or “green,” the colors of the two major parties.
The mayor also thanked the city government’s employees for their support because their sacrifices were paving the way for creating the Taipei of 2050.
Ko also emphasized the need to make the capital livable for all parts of the population, so that “the people can work in Taipei, live in Taipei, raise their children in Taipei.”
He said his government wanted to make Taipei a place full of caring, fairness and justice, and a city easy to live in.
Since taking office, Ko has founded several new committees, including bodies dealing with food safety, clean politics and open government, and has become embroiled in disputes with major business groups over the cost and effectiveness of build-operate-transfer projects.
