China to deploy bombers to target Taiwan

Taipei, April 2 (CNA) China will soon deploy its Xian H-6 bombers to the Nanjing Military Region on its southeastern coast, mainly to target Taiwan and Japan's southernmost prefecture of Okinawa, according to the latest Kanwa Defense Review. The People's Liberation Army has been giving great attention to the region, which encompasses the provinces of Anhui, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi and Fujian as well as the municipality of Shanghai, according to the publication. The military region faces the Taiwan Strait -- the waterway separating Taiwan and China. The Anqing Airport -- a public and military airport -- where the 10th Bomber Division is based, began to be renovated in 2013, and is now the only bomber airbase with underground ammunition facilities, the publication said. All indications showed that China will deploy Xian H-6 bombers to the airport, mainly targeting Taiwan and Okinawa. The bombers can fire cruise missiles with ranges from 1,500 km and 2,000 km. The Anqing Airport is 1,100 km away from Taiwan and 700 km from Okinawa. (By Scully Hsiao)
