New AIT program in southern Taiwan to promote American culture

Taipei, April 2 (CNA) A new program set up jointly by the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) and the Pingtung County government in southern Taiwan is aimed at promoting American culture among local children and youth, according to the AIT. The program, called "American Shelf," is located in the Children's Reading Room of Pingtung County's Cultural Affairs Department, said the AIT, which represents U.S. interests in Taiwan in the absence of bilateral diplomatic ties. Under the program, books about the U.S. are provided to help local children and youth better understand American culture and society, the AIT said. The collection also includes information on studying and teaching English, it added. Meanwhile, materials highlighting university and graduate school opportunities in the U.S. are also available, it said. The program was unveiled during a March 31 ceremony, co-hosted by Pingtung County Cultural Affairs Department head Wu Jin-fa (???) and AIT Kaohsiung Branch Chief Robert DeWitt. "We hope this American Shelf will become a window connecting Pingtung to the world," DeWitt said at the opening ceremony. This latest initiative follows the AIT's other information resource programs around Taiwan, including American Corners in Kaohsiung, Taichung, and Taipei, as well as the American Innovation Center. The AIT said that it has also teamed up with local partners to set up American Shelves in other locations in Taiwan such as Taoyuan county, Yilan county and Tainan. (By Elaine Hou)
