Pepper powder found to contain industrial-grade chemicals

Taipei, March 31 (CNA) Prosecutors in Changhua County have found more than 80 metric tons of damp-affected pepper powder products that may contain industrial-grade magnesium carbonate (???) and up to 200 downstream companies might also have received the products, the Changhua District Prosecutors' Office said Tuesday. The prosecutors' office and Changhua public health authorities learned that a company in Taichung is suspected of having sold industrial-grade magnesium carbonate to three pepper powder and curry powder manufacturers in the county who between them make 39 types of pepper powder and curry powder products. Changhua County Public Health Bureau Director Yeh Yen-po (???) said an investigation has been launched. The company that sold the industrial-grade magnesium carbonate has licenses to sell industrial-grade and edible chemical additives. It has been engaged in the sale of industrial-grade magnesium carbonate for more than 20 years, Yeh said. The three manufacturers have bought the industrial-grade magnesium carbonate, which is not edible for possibly containing heavy metals, in order to save money, according to Yeh. One bottle of pepper powder contains about 3 percent magnesium carbonate and it is difficult to identify the ingredient with the naked eye, Yeh said, adding that the bureau has produced a list of the downstream buyers, located all over Taiwan, Yeh added.
