Maiden flight from Turkey arrives in Taiwan

Taipei, March 31 (CNA) Turkish Airlines flight TK24, the first ever direct flight from Istanbul to Taipei, arrived at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) Tuesday. The Airbus A340-300, with 34 business-class seats and 236 economy-class seats, was carrying 270 passengers. Turkey's representative to Taiwan, Ismet Erikan, told CNA March 5 that the direct flights will be "a new window, a new door-opening for the people of Taiwan, for the business circles of Taiwan" and will definitely "increase trade, tourism and academic cooperation" between the two countries. Erikan expressed hope that Taiwanese tourists visiting Turkey "will increase to 100,000 or more annually," up from some 40,000 in 2014. In four hours, one can reach 50 different countries from Istanbul, representing a quarter of the world's population, Erikan added. Non-direct flights between Taipei and Instanbul take some 14-16 hours, with stopovers in cities like Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong and Singapore. The direct flights will shorten the flight time by around four hours. Turkish airlines has been voted Europe's Best Airline at the Skytrax Passengers Choice Awards from 2011-2014.
