Apple supplier Pegatron looking to self-learning talent (update)

Taipei, March 31 (CNA) A major Taiwan-based supplier of Apple Inc., Pegatron Corp. (??), said Tuesday it needs employees who can foster new skills and ideas through learning on their own if it hopes to flourish in the fast-changing mobile industry. The capability of such employees should be cultivated in schools by teaching them how to learn by themselves after graduation rather than relying on knowledge from textbooks, Pegatron Chairman T.H. Tung (???) said at a panel discussion organized by CommonWealth Parenting magazine. "Schools should help students develop self-learning skills and motivate them to learn more on their own," he said. Pegatron has moved toward becoming a "self-learning" organization after it was founded in 2008 as a motherboard manufacturer. The company encourages employees to address challenges in the industry and expand their skills from electrical engineering to new areas such as materials processing and industrial design, Tung said. Apple first chose Pegatron as a supplier in 2012, when it contracted the Taiwan-based vendor to assemble the iPhone 4S. It later increased Pegatron's orders for the iPhone 5C in 2013 and the iPhone 6 in 2014, according to foreign brokerages. Pegatron currently churns out 30 percent of the 4.7-inch iPhone 6, while Taiwan-based Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. (??), also known as Foxconn Technology Group, has received 70 percent of the orders for the iPhone 6 and all of the orders for the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus, the brokerage firms said. Pegatron will reportedly get more than 50 percent of Apple's orders for the next-generation iPhone 6S that may be launched in September this year, part of Apple's strategy to diversify its supply partners to reduce supply risk and gain leverage in pricing negotiations.
