One suspect killed, police injured in drug raid shootout (update)

Taipei, March 30 (CNA) A shootout between police and drug suspects on Monday evening in Zhubei in Hsinchu County has left one suspect dead and two policemen injured, according to authorities. Accompanied by Coast Guard officials, several police officers from Taichung were attempting to arrest a 40-year-old man wanted for drug violations in Zhubei when the man and his accomplice fired gunshots at the police, according to law enforcement officials. The man, surnamed Hung, was hit by a bullet in the exchange but still tried to escape by jumping out of the building he was in. He was then taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival, police said. One police officer was shot in his arm while another sprained his foot during the shootout, but their injuries are not life-threatening, according to the police. Another male suspect, who was armed with a MP5 submachine gun, was found hidden in the trunk of a car in the basement of the building and arrested by the police later Monday night. Hung's pregnant girlfriend was also arrested by the police earlier in the day. Over 60 backup police were deployed to the scene after the gunfight occurred. Police also extended the cordon around the building to protect civilians. (By Liao Jen-kai and Christie Chen)
