Indonesia to continue sending fishermen to Taiwan: official

Jakarta, March 30 (CNA) Indonesia will continue to send fishermen to work on Taiwanese vessels, an Indonesian official said Sunday. Agusdin Subiantoro, deputy head of the Agency of Placement and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers, was responding to reports that Indonesia had decided to stop sending fishermen to Taiwan. He said the suspension was a previous notification, which the government will soon lift. The Indonesian government is now preparing to resume sending fishermen to Taiwan, he added. Wang Han-yuan (???), a section chief of Taiwan's representative office in Indonesia, said the office has asked the agency about the matter. Nustron Wahid, head of the agency, agreed to lift the previous suspension and continue to send fishermen to Taiwan in the wake of protests by brokerage firms. Taiwan media reports said that many brokerage firms received official notification March 16 that Indonesia will stop sending fishermen to Taiwan in a bid to upgrade the protection of Indonesian fishermen working there. The unilateral announcement caught many deep-sea and inshore fishing operators in Taiwan off-guard, as Indonesian fishery workers reportedly account for 80 percent of Taiwan's foreign fishery workers.
