ZenFones may see fingerprint authentication this year

Taipei, March 30 (CNA) Asustek Computer Inc's (??) flagship smartphones might be equipped with fingerprint identification as early as the second half of this year, the China Times reported on Monday. According to the report, Asus Chairman Jonney Shih (???) last week at a product launch in China said that the company's flagship smartphone series could be equipped with fingerprint identification as early as the second half of this year. Shih said that the new feature will be seen in either the company's forthcoming ZenFone 3, or in ZenFone 2 variants expected to hit store shelves in the second half of this year. Shih said at the event that last year, sales of the company's ZenFone 1 in China only accounted for about 7 to 8 percent of overall Zenfone sales worldwide. He acknowledged that the launch of the 3G-compatible ZenFone 1 was not ideal, as the China market at the time was transitioning to the 4G mobile broadband network technology. Shih emphasized that a variety of ZenFone 2 models will be available in the China market to cater to users subscribed to either FDD-LTE or TD-LTE networks. Backed by a new distribution deal with a local retailer, Asus is expecting the China market to represent 30 percent of overall sales, or 7.5 million to 8 million units, according to Shih's goal of selling more than 25 million ZenFone 2 handsets worldwide this year. Meanwhile, consumers have grown accustomed to the ease of reliable fingerprint identification featured on Apple Inc. devices such as the iPhone and iPad. First seen on 2013's iPhone 5s, Apple's proprietary Touch ID technology is enabled through a silicon capacitive sensor that is protected by laser-cut sapphire glass on the handset's home button. Apple's fingerprint identification implementation is deemed more reliable than most solutions seen on rival Android devices, which often require users to perform a swiping motion for authentication. The ZenFone 2 is slated to be launched in more markets, including Hong Kong, Russia, Singapore, Japan, Indonesia, India and the United States, beginning in April. (By Ted Chen)
