Social Democratic Party unveils candidates for legislative seats

Taipei, March 29 (CNA) A new political party in Taiwan that is vowing to make a difference declared its birth Sunday and announced its list of candidates for the 2016 legislative elections. "Politics is about seeking a better life," read the main slogan on a banner at a press conference announcing the formation of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). The party's list of nominees to run for legislative seats includes Urda Yen (???), the party's secretary-general, and lawyer Lee Yen-jung (???). Yen was not yet sure where she would run, but Lee has reportedly decided to compete in Taipei's third electoral district covering the city's Zhongshan and Songshan districts. Other members planning legislative bids are party leader and National Taiwan University sociology professor Fan Yun (??), gay rights advocate Jennifer Lu (???) and anti-death-penalty activist Miao Po-ya(???). Fan is reportedly considering running in Taipei's Daan district. During the press conference, Fan said the SDP is a new party that aims to break the oligarchy dominated by the ruling Kuomintang and the main opposition Democratic Progressive Party.
Its mission is to make a difference in the political landscape by joining hands with employees and economically and socially disadvantaged groups to attract votes from the younger generation. The party also unveiled its political platform focused on increasing wage levels to safeguard workers' rights, reforming the pension system, increasing taxes on business magnates and the wealthy, promoting fairness and transparency in politics, and opposing discrimination in society.
