Taiwan to express wish to join AIIB in Siew-Xi meeting

Boao, March 27 (CNA) Former Vice President Vincent Siew (???) said Friday he will tell Chinese President Xi Jinping (???) at the Boao Forum for Asia on Saturday that Taiwan should join the China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). Siew, who is heading Taiwan's delegation to the forum, arrived in Boao in Hainan Province for the annual conference on Thursday.
The former vice president said that for the AIIB to play its role well, it is better to have more economies participating that have experience in economic development. "This will help provide AIIB with a good model and enable the operations of the AIIB to run more smoothly and successfully," Siew said. In an interview published Friday by the Taipei-based China Times, President Ma Ying-jeou (???) said Taiwan should actively take part in the ongoing initiative to set up the AIIB instead of staying on the sidelines. Ma said he has asked Siew to discuss the possibility of Taiwan's participation in the AIIB with Xi when they meet at the forum. A multilateral development bank proposed by China, the AIIB is regarded by some as a potential rival to the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), all of which are institutions dominated by developed countries such as the United States.
