China growing more challenging for Taiwan investors: report

Taipei, March 25 (CNA) Taiwanese investors are facing increasing challenges in China as they continue to lose their competitive edge in a slowing market, a Chinese-language magazine reported Wednesday. According to Hong Kong-based Asia Fortune, rising employee welfare and wage standards in China have led to mounting costs for Taiwanese businesspeople. China's slowing economic growth and sluggish consumer inflation have only added to Taiwanese investors' woes, the report said. For instance, in Dongguan City in southern China, where there is a cluster of some 6,000 Taiwanese businesses, there have been shutdowns and massive lay-offs among them, according to the report. It said that only 20-30 percent of those companies survived the economic slump after the global financial crisis in 2007-2008. Since Taiwanese investors do not enjoy any special benefits in China, it is natural that they would consider relocating to countries in Southeast Asia and elsewhere, the report added.
