Taipei, March 25 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou (???) received courteous treatment during his just-concluded visit to Singapore to pay his last respects to Lee Kuan Yew (???), the founding father of the city-state who died March 23, an unnamed source said Wednesday. Escorted from the airport, Ma was greeted personally by Lee's son, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong (???), and his wife at Istana, site of the prime minister's official residence, according to the source. Lee Hsien Loong was waiting for Ma when he arrived at Istana, where the family held the private wake, the source said, adding that that they enjoyed close interaction. The source said the prime minister thanked Ma for making the time for a short visit, repeatedly saying that he was "very grateful to you for coming" during a 30-minute chat. Ma, who brought his own calligraphy brush, also wrote his praises for Lee in both English and Chinese, the source said. Ma has maintained a deep friendship with the Lee family for the past 30 years and his attendance at the wake symbolizes the profound friendship between them, the source added. The wake was attended by the family's relatives, close friends and government officials, according to Singapore media reports. Ma will not send an envoy to attend Lee's state funeral March 29 as he has expressed condolences himself, the source said. (By Tang Pei-chun and Lee Hsin-Yin)
