TaiwanICDF to send 15 volunteers overseas for humanitarian aid

Taipei, March 25 (CNA) A government-funded agency said Wednesday that it is planning to send 15 volunteers overseas later this year as part of efforts to provide development and humanitarian assistance to less-developed countries. The Taipei-based International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) said it has selected 15 people interested in its overseas volunteer programs, which are aimed at helping Taiwan's diplomatic allies and other countries with good ties with the country, as well as promoting bilateral exchanges. After undergoing related training in Taiwan, the volunteers will be dispatched to countries such as Panama, Nicaragua and Tuvalu -- which are among Taiwan's 22 diplomatic allies -- as well as to northern Thailand, it said. They will teach local people such subjects as English, math, science, accounting and computers, the TaiwanICDF said. The agency began sending volunteers overseas in 1996 and has so far dispatched 619 volunteers to a total of 37 countries in Africa, Central and South America, the Caribbean and the Asia-Pacific region.
