Taiwan's ex-vice president, Chinese leader to meet Saturday

Taipei, March 25 (CNA) Taiwan's former Vice President Vincent Siew (???) and Chinese President Xi Jinping (???) are expected to meet at the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) annual conference on Saturday, sources said Wednesday. The sources said the meeting will focus on Taiwan's bid to join international organizations and participate in regional economic integration. Siew and Xi may also discuss the China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), the sources said. A multilateral development bank proposed by China, the AIIB is regarded by some as a potential rival to the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), all of which are institutions dominated by developed countries such as the United States. Xi and Siew last met in November 2014, when Siew was leading the Taiwan delegation to the Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation conference in Beijing. Siew is scheduled to depart for Boao on Thursday night as the head of a Taiwanese delegation to the regional economic forum, and will travel to Singapore on Sunday to attend the state funeral of Lee Kuan Yew, the founding father of the city-state, in a private capacity.
