LONDON (AP) -- Kevin Pietersen has been released from part of his contract with Indian Premier League side Sunrisers Hyderabad, enabling the batsman to play for an English county to improve his chances of an England recall.
In a statement released on his official website, Pietersen says "I'm going to do everything in my power to earn a recall to the international set-up."
The agreement with the Sunrisers will see Pietersen miss the entire first phase of the IPL. He will be recalled if the team reaches the knockout stages of the competition from May 19-24.
England ditched Pietersen after last year's Ashes in Australia so the team could build a new "ethos and philosophy." The new chief of English cricket says Pietersen could be recalled if he performs well in county cricket.
