Russia turns over new leaf after doping scandals says coach

MOSCOW (AP) -- Russia's new head track coach says the country has put years of doping scandals behind it and now has a clean team ahead of next year's Olympics.

Yuri Borzakovsky, the 2004 Olympic 800-meter gold medalist, was given the head coach job last month after his predecessor Valentin Maslakov resigned following a doping scandal in which three Russian Olympic champion race-walkers were banned.

That was the last such case of an old era, Borzakovsky said, telling Russian media that "now we have a new team and everyone in it is clean."

Borzakovsky added that he had told athletes that doping scandals "are last century and we've started a new life," accompanied by intensive anti-doping enforcement and education programs.
