Former premier to attend Lee Kuan Yew's funeral

Taipei, March 24 (CNA) Former Premier Su Tseng-chang (???) will attend a state funeral for Lee Kuan Yew (???), the founding father of Singapore, Su's staff said Tuesday. Su received a letter on Monday from Lee Kuan Yew's son, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong (???), inviting Su to attend Lee Kuan Yew's funeral scheduled for March 29 in a private capacity, according to Su's aides. Su has replied that he will attend the funeral, and his itinerary is being arranged. Asked if the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), to which Su belongs, will send an envoy to the funeral, DPP spokesman Cheng Yun-peng (???) said "it will respect the Singapore government's arrangements, and it currently has no other plans." Though Taiwan does not have diplomatic relations with Singapore, President Ma Ying-jeou (???) left for Singapore just before noon on Tuesday to pay his last respects to Lee Kuan Yew, who died early Monday. The visit was not revealed ahead of time and not officially confirmed even after Ma's China Airlines charter took off. Because of diplomatic obstacles, Ma will not attend Lee's funeral on March 29, but Taiwan is expected to send a delegation in his place. (By Sophia Yeh and Lilian Wu)
