Pegatron delivers record fourth-quarter EPS (update)

Taipei, March 23 (CNA) Taiwan's Pegatron Corp. (??), a major supplier of Apple Inc.'s iPhones, reported Monday earnings per share (EPS) for the fourth quarter of 2014 that set a new quarterly high for the company thanks to brisk sales of communication products. Pegatron, which spun off from Taiwanese PC maker Asustek Computer Inc. (??) in 2010, posted fourth-quarter EPS of NT$2.38 (US$0.075) on quarterly revenue of NT$351.95 billion, driven mainly by strong shipments of smartphones during the year-end holiday shopping season. In the three months ending in December, communication products accounted for a record-high 59 percent of Pegatron's overall revenue, compared with 45 percent in the third quarter and 39 percent in the second quarter. Benefiting from higher smartphone volume, Pegatron's revenue from communication products grew by 160 percent year-on-year in the fourth quarter. In contrast, revenue from the company's computing products such as notebooks fell 38 percent in the fourth quarter year-on-year and revenue from consumer electronics products such as tablets declined 17 percent from a year earlier. For the whole of 2014, Pegatron's EPS rose 50 percent to a record-high of NT$6.24. Sales were up 7.4 percent from a year earlier to NT$1.019 trillion, the first time the company surpassed the NT$1 trillion mark. The company forecast a 15-20 percent sequential decline in notebook shipments in the first quarter of 2015 and anticipated motherboard and desktop PC shipments would drop by the same rate. Pegatron also expected its full-year revenue in 2015 to increase 5-10 percent annually due in part to continued growth in communication products. Shares of Pegatron rose 3.49 percent to NT$92 Monday on the Taiwan stock exchange prior to the earnings announcement. (By Jeffrey Wu)
