People threw colored powder and water at each other in Malaysia last week to celebrate the Hindu Holi festival of colors, while rooftop police watched over Tiananmen Square as China wrapped up its annual National People's Congress.

In other glimpses of daily life across Asia, a Thai actress-in-training applied makeup for a performance of traditional "Khon" theater in Bangkok, and an Indian bride adjusted her veil during a mass Muslim marriage ceremony.

A crane lifted the mangled remains of a railway carriage after a passenger train derailed in northern India, killing 31 people. In another disaster far to the southeast, residents of the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu surveyed the damage from Cyclone Pam, which killed 17 people and left about 65,000 people homeless.

In Manila, a tourist took a horse-drawn carriage ride around the historic walled city of Intramuros. And in Cambodia, a red sun rose over the famed Angkor Wat temple, visited this past weekend by U.S. first lady Michelle Obama, on a trip to promote girls' education.
