Su Jia-chyuan, general convener of the DPP Election Council, announced Sunday that Liu Chao-hao came out on top in the party’s telephone poll to pick a candidate for the contest for the Legislative Yuan from Taitung. Liu, the current holder of the seat, beat out former legislator Lai Kun-cheng in a hotly-contested race for the nomination..
The DPP Central Committee reported that Liu won the election with a total of about 42.5% of those polled. Su explained that Taitung is a tough district, and the two men had been deadlocked through much of the campaign leading up to the telephone survey Saturday. He added that both candidates had been very cooperative in making arrangements for the poll and had agreed that the party’s CPC Central Committee would not release any detailed results from the poll other than the name of the candidate who polled the most votes among party members. Su congratulated both men on conducting a hard-fought but fair campaign.
