Water wastage to be penalized as rationing looms

Taipei, March 21 (CNA) The government is planning to introduce a new policy to reward water conservation and penalize waste, as part of its efforts to combat the current drought, the worst to hit Taiwan in 67 years, the Water Resources Agency (WRA) said on Saturday. Under the plan, users who reduce water consumption will receive a discount on their water bills, while those whose consumption increases will be charged a higher rate, according to WRA spokesman Lai Chien-hsin. If everything goes well, the policy will come into force on April 1, Lai said. In addition, the Cabinet is pushing for an amendment to the Water Supply Act to require that all water-related products are certified for water conservancy, he said. If water conservancy products are used in households, they could reduce daily consumption by up to 20 liters per person, he added. (By Yang Shu-min and Y.F. Low)
