Taiwan shares close up 0.13% at seven-year high

Taipei, March 20 (CNA) Shares on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE) closed higher on Friday after hitting a seven-year high above 9,700 points on Thursday. The weighted index on the TWSE ended the day up 12.96 points, or 0.13 percent, at 9,749.69, on turnover of NT$121.20 billion (US$3.85 billion). The local bourse opened at 9,706.35 and mostly hovered below 9,736.73 (Thursday's closing point) before briefly surging at the end of trading to finish higher. Ending the day on 9,749.69, the weighted index was up 170.34 points, or 1.78 percent, compared with March 13. While the performance of large-cap stocks varied, shares in Catcher Technology Co. (??), a metal casing supplier to Apple Inc., closed up at NT$324. Shares in Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. (??), the world's largest contract electronics maker, also registered an increase, closing at NT93.5, the highest level in more than three months. Many publicly traded companies plan to release their 2014 financial statements next week, which could boost expectations on the TWSE, especially for electronics stocks, dealers said.
