Ex-VP proposes Kinmen Forum to boost cross-strait exchanges

Taipei, March 20 (CNA) Former Vice President Vincent Siew (???) proposed holding a "Kinmen Forum" to promote exchanges between Taiwan and China, as speaking at National Quemoy University in Kinmen on Friday. Kinmen, "could become a platform for cultural exchanges between the two sides," Siew said. He touted the island as being rich in Southern Fujian culture, which he praised as part of core Chinese culture. Given that cultural exchange is often used to develop mutual trust between peoples, Kinmen could serve as a starting point in efforts to foster cross-strait peace and mutual trust, Siew added. Siew also highlighted the island's economic potential thanks to the globally-renowned Kinmen Kaoliang, distilled liquor made from fermented sorghum.
As long as cross-strait policy continues to become more open, "Kinmen could become a distribution hub," he said. With these natural advantages, Kinmen would be the perfect place to hold a cross-strait forum based on the approach of the annual Boao Forum for Asia (BFA), he added. Siew will head the Taiwanese delegation at the 2015 BFA, slated for March 26-29 in Boao of Hainan Province in southern China. (By Emmy Huang and Elizabeth Hsu)
