Tigerair Taiwan set to fly Northeast Asia route soon

Taipei, March 20 (CNA) China Airlines (CAL) Chairman Sun Hung-hsiang (???) said on Friday that budget carrier Tigerair Taiwan, a joint venture with Tiger Airways from Singapore, will unveil a new route to Northeast Asia in the near future. The new destination could be in Japan or South Korea, Sun said, adding that Tigerair Taiwan is expecting 2015 to be its first profitable year since becoming operational last September. Sources close to the project said earlier this month that the airline could launch a new Taipei-Tokyo (Narita) route in April, amid competition from rival V Air in Taiwan's nascent no-frills airline market. Ticket prices are expected to be announced by the end of March and schedules for round trip flights will be finalized in early April, sources said. Tokyo will be Tigerair Taiwan's fifth international destination, following Singapore, Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Macau. The airline was the first Taiwan-based low-budget carrier to take to the skies. Its sole local competitor, V Air, a no-frills airline operated by Taiwan's TransAsia Airways, said it plans to launch a new route from Taiwan to Macau in mid-April and will add Japan and South Korea to its list of destinations in the middle of this year. The two airlines, which mainly cover destinations in Southeast Asia, have recorded an average load factor of about 80 percent, with travel on low-cost carriers becoming increasingly popular in Taiwan.
