Value of export orders in February down 2.7% year-on-year

Taipei, March 20 (CNA) The value of orders placed by foreign businesses with Taiwanese firms in February dropped by 2.7 percent year-on-year to US$29.89 billion, the Ministry of Economic Affairs reported Friday. However, the aggregate value of foreign orders received by Taiwanese companies in the January-February period totaled US$68.93 billion, a 3.2 percent increase over the same period of last year, according to the ministry. In the first two months of this year, outbound shipments of information/telecommunication and electronics products, two of the country's main exports, posted a yearly growth of 13.9 percent and 7.4 percent, respectively, The value of orders from both the United States and Europe in the January- February period registered annual double-digit growth of 17.5 percent and 13.1 percent, respectively, the ministry tallies showed. However, the value of orders from Japan in the two-month period dropped by 26.4 percent annually, according to the data. (By C.W. Huang and Flor Wang)
