China to launch controversial flight route March 29

Taipei, March 20 (CNA) China will launch a new flight route, which hugs the median line of the Taiwan Strait, on March 29, Taiwan's Civil Aviation Administration (CAA) said Friday. The CAA said it has been informed that after a delay of the route's planned opening on March 5, China will publish a Notice to Airmen regarding the north-south M503 flight route later Friday and will begin commercial flights March 29. Flights operating on the M503 route will actually fly six nautical miles west of the designated path, aviation officials said. Taiwan has voiced opposition to the new route, citing fears they would compromise aviation safety in the region and infringe on the country's sovereignty. In January, China announced its unilateral designation of the M503 commercial flight route, which runs close to the median line in the Taiwan Strait. (By Lee Hsin-Yin)
