I-Mei decides to stop selling tobacco from April

Taipei, March 18 (CNA) I-Mei Food Co., one of Taiwan's largest food producers, confirmed Wednesday a news report that it will remove all tobacco products from its chain stores beginning early April.
The company made the announcement two hours after it denied a newspaper report that it will from April 2 stop selling tobacco products at its 88 chain stores around the country.
"This (stop selling tobacco) is a premature thought," I-Mei General Manager Kao Chih-ming said earlier in the day.
However, I-Mei spokesman Chao Chi-yao said that the company has held the idea for quite some time and has been in talks with its suppliers about halting tobacco sales.
Though it takes time to negotiate with the suppliers, the company changed its mind and quickly made the decision within two hours after taking public expectations into account.
The decision was made based on the recent poor air quality in the country and in recognition of the efforts of John Tung Foundation and lifelong volunteer Sun Yueh, as well as parents' push for a no-smoking environment, Cao added. (By Han Ting-ting and Evelyn Kao)
